STAR certified station
STAR certified smog check.
STAR is California's program for smog check stations that meet higher performance standards set by the Bureau of Automotive Repair.
- Some cars must go to a STAR station. The DMV directs certain vehicles, including those more likely to have high emissions, to STAR stations only.
- A regular station can't certify them. If your notice asks for a STAR station, only a STAR station's result counts.
- We're STAR certified. Directed vehicle or everyday renewal, you can come here.

Before your smog check.
A quick check before you drive over can save you a second trip.
All prep tipsCheck engine light is off
If the check engine light is on, your car will not pass. The light means the car’s computer has found a problem, usually in the emissions system.
More on thisNo recent battery change or jump start
Disconnecting or replacing the battery, a jump start, or clearing trouble codes resets the car’s built-in self-tests, called readiness monitors. If they haven’t finished, the car can’t pass yet.
More on thisEmissions parts original or approved
Every smog check includes a look at your emissions equipment. If a part has been removed, disconnected, or replaced with an aftermarket part that isn’t approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the car won’t pass.
More on thisEngine running smoothly
If the engine idles rough, hesitates, misfires, smokes, or you can smell fuel, have it checked before the smog test. These problems often cause a fail even when the dashboard looks fine.
More on thisTires at the right pressure
Most 2000 and newer vehicles are tested through the onboard computer. Many older vehicles get a tailpipe test, which can involve driving the car on a dynamometer (a set of rollers). Tires at the pressure listed on the driver’s door jamb help that test run smoothly.
More on thisDMV renewal notice, if you have one
If you have a DMV registration renewal notice, bring it along. It shows whether your vehicle needs a smog check and whether it must go to a STAR station. Your results are sent to the DMV electronically.

Do I need a smog check?
Quick answers to what most drivers ask. For the full picture, read our guide.
Read the smog check guideDo I need a smog check?
In California, most gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles from model year 1976 and newer need a smog check every other year to renew registration. Diesel vehicles from 1998 and newer with a gross vehicle weight rating of 14,000 pounds or less also need one. Vehicles eight model years old or newer are exempt at renewal.
My DMV notice says a STAR station is required. Can you help?
Yes. Union City Smog Check is STAR certified. Only a STAR station can certify a vehicle whose renewal notice says a STAR station is required.
Do I need a smog check to sell my car?
Usually, yes. In California the seller provides a smog certificate, and the buyer needs one from within the last 90 days. Vehicles four model years old or newer, and transfers between immediate family members, are exempt.
How long is a smog certificate good for?
A smog certificate is sent to the DMV electronically and is valid for 90 days.
